/VOX is back!

April 14, 2009

Apparently I stink at blogging, but never mind me.  A fresh, new batch of art is up on the /vox homepage @ www.heartland.edu/vox.  Check it out…

And don’t forget the contest!  We have one every semester and someone always gets the money.

Winners!

September 18, 2007

Wow, I should probably check in with this blog more often.  But anyway… the winners for the contest have been selected.  Check out the site to see them and other submitted works.

We plan on having the contest every semester, so get ready to submit!  And let me know if I can help in any way.

Lots of submissions!

May 14, 2007

All I can say is WOW.

/VOX has been overwhelmed with submissions. Throw a little money around and people take notice. Go figure. I’m very pleased to see that the arts are alive and well at Heartland Community College. I’ve received art in many different mediums: photos, music, drawings, writing, paintings… I hope to be able to showcase most if not all of these pieces. My goal is to get a page up and running for the beginning of fall semester. We will also choose a winner for our contest by that time. Thanks to all who submitted. I look forward to seeing more submissions this fall. David

A Contest!

April 11, 2007

I don’t usually like to think of the creative arts as a competition, but hey, we are living la vida capitalist, so why the heck not make some money?  The details are up on the webpage, so go there for more info. 1st prize is $100 bucks!

And an update on submissions: I’ve already received more submissions this semester than in all of last semester.  It looks as if people are starting to take notice.  So get those submissions in to me by May 5th, and maybe you can win some cash.

Questions?  Email me at vox@heartland.edu

Art and artist pages are up and running

February 27, 2007

Well, /VOX [virtual] has its first art exhibit up on the main page.  Humble beginnings, yes, but I see this as just that: a beginning.  I’ve also made artist pages that include other works by these Heartland students.

I welcome any comments and suggestions.

I’m still posting art.

February 15, 2007

Some of you may have noticed that we have student art up on the /VOX main page.  I’m very slow, and there is more to present, but I haven’t quite gotten to it all yet.  Many of the artists showcased on the main page have contributed other art too.  I’m working on pages so that the rest of their work will be available for viewing too.  As of right now, I’m thinking that they may be individual artist pages that provide links to the various works.

Where to begin?

February 8, 2007

Gosh, it has been so long since I’ve posted, I don’t know where to start. /VOX is still alive!!! I guess that is a good place to start. We have art!!! That is certainly important too. If you’re reading this blog, you’ve probably seen the home page of /VOX [Virtual], so you probably know that we have some student art presented there. I’m working on getting more up soon. And I’m always ready for more. So keep it coming folks!

Deadline extended to Dec. 1st

October 31, 2006

The good news is that I’ve been receiving student submissions. Hooray!  The bad news is, is that I’m greedy and I want more.  Boooo!  I’ve extended the deadline for Special Issue #1 for many reasons, and my greed is only the least of these reasons.

The biggest and best reason is that students and instructors have asked me to.  Lots of projects for classes are being finished up in Nov. and I wanted to give students a chance to get those in.

In general, the response to /VOX has been very good.  There have been many questions and I think the interest level is encouraging.  Of course, this is my first time trying anything like this, so I may be completely delusional, which is often the case.

But the art I’ve received so far is impressive, and I’m not easily impressed.  Someone sent me some digital images today that I thought were first rate work.  It is my strong belief that this art needs to be seen and experienced, so SEND ME MORE ART!

If you have any questions, let me know

Ask and you shall receive

September 28, 2006

Just an FYI: some students have contacted me about redesigning the site and working on the Special Issue.  You don’t know how happy this makes me.  If possible, I’d like students to have a hand in all aspects of the development of /VOX.  But I still see this as only the beginning.  We could still use more design help and editing help.  No significant experience necessary.

And eventually we’re gonna need some ART people.  Don’t be shy.  If you’re in a creative writing class, or a photography class, or a painting class, you might be getting a visit from me early in October.  The deadline for the Special Issue is Oct. 31st.  We want your art!  If anyone has any questions, you know where to find me.

A Deadline was born! October 31st for Special Issue 1.

September 18, 2006

Yes, it may seem strange that a virtual journal would have a deadline, especially since /VOX Virtual will accept and publish submissions at any time during the school year.  However, I felt a need to have a semesterly presentation that concentrated the efforts of all involved.

So the Special Issue was born, and the deadline for that issue will be October 31st.  Besides being a day folks might remember, I’d also like to have the special issue ready for public presentation before Thanksgiving.  It will remain available FOREVER! in one form or another.

And of course, I’d still like folks to think of /VOX Virtual as a place where they can interact and submit whenever.  That’s how we roll.  I see /VOX as a constantly growing and morphing animal, and the Special Issue will be but one aspect or incarnation of that animal.  (END cheesy metaphor here.)

Oh, and I added some links.  Keep those coming folks!
